Legal/Ethical Issues - Web Design

When creating a website you need to take into consideration the legal and ethical issues of web design. You must consider things such as copy right issues of any photographs, video's or music which could be on the site, different races and religion, someone's sexuality and gender and you must also think about someone's privacy and have some decency when taking a photograph which has someone in the picture.

Copyright Issues © and Trademark

When making your own website copyright issues are something which you should be aware of. If you have your own songs, music, pictures, logo’s or anything else which you have made/created then you own the rights of them. If you were to see anyone else using your products then you would be able to sue them for stealing them, however if you were to use someone’s products on your website and class them as your own then the person who actually owns them can also sue you for taking their work. If you’re a photographer you could always watermark your work by adding the copyright symbol before your mark. For example mine would be, ©KatieWilliams’. You could always write below your videos or music to make people aware you do own the products and people aren’t able to use them without your permission. You could always use which is a sign or a design which helps to identify products of a particular source from those of others. The trademark owner can be an individual or business organization and it can be located on a label, package or on the product.

Privacy and Decency

When taking any photographs or videos you should think about the privacy. If you were to take a video or photograph with someone in it without them knowing or doing it in secret then you aren’t respecting their privacy. You must have decency and be aware that not everyone might want photographs or videos online with their family and personal life involved. You should ask the person if they are comfortable with you using the photos or videos being online before you put them up. You should also think about someone’s race, religion, gender and sexuality because you don't want to put something online which could upset a possible target audience. This could stop your website from growing and getting views because you might be upsetting different races, religions, genders and sexuality. Be aware that some things might have certain content which a younger audience could find upsetting so make sure your add that certain photos or videos might upset someone or might not be suitable for certain ages then you’re making your audience aware.
